WHEDco is a community development organization in the South Bronx, founded on the radically simple idea that all people deserve healthy, vibrant communities. we build affordable, green homes, but we also ensure that families in the South Bronx, the poorest urban Congressional District in the country, have access to all the resources that create thriving neighborhoods - from high-quality early childhood education and after school programs, to economic opportunities and access to the arts.
WHEDco serves over 1,000 school-aged children each year through our academic and arts enrichment initiatives in the South Bronx, a neighborhood that is considered a food desert without sufficient access to healthy food, and which, as a result, suffers from poor health outcomes. To combat the health issues associated with poverty, WHEDco engages young people in urban gardening and farming, at both our Intervale Green affordable housing development and through our middle school enrichment program. Students learn about healthy eating and where food comes from through this important work.
We have recently received funding to install a greenhouse to facilitate year-round gardening for the students in our middle school program. The greenhouse would be installed in the back yard of our Urban Horizons development, located next to PS/MS 218, our partner public school.
We are currently seeking an architect or structural engineer who can provide some pro bono services and advice to ensure the project's success and compliance with any applicable NYC DOB codes.
We have identified a prefabricated greenhouse that we hope to install this September, with the guidance of an architect or structural engineer. The product we have identified does not have a foundation, but rather uses a steel base, which can be bolted into the ground. We have not yet purchased this greenhouse, and are open to identifying a new product if a firm can provide guidance in a different direction.
We would like to install the greenhouse in September, when the corporate funder who provided the funds for it, can help with the installation as part of their company volunteer day.
In addition to exposing children to the benefits of nutritious eating from an early age, WHEDco's garden also creates access to healthy food for Bronx residents in a place where fresh, affordable produce is not always easy to find as it is considered a "food desert." By adding a greenhouse to the garden, WHEDco is able to improve the access of healthy food for Bronxites for a longer portion of the year.
