BRUTE LABS and Eastside College Preparatory School seek pro bono interior design services through Public Architecture's 1% program. BRUTE LABS hope to liaise with the potential design firm to create a more welcoming dorm-living environment for the middle school and high school boarding students. We believe that the 1% program is a promising launchpad for engaging designers in what will be a meaningful and well-appreciated project.
Goal: BRUTE LABS and Eastside College Prep hope to "cool-ify the dorms". BRUTE LABS envisions a space that features collaborative furniture, colored paint to break up the space and other inventive ideas to promote a creative aesthetic for learning and living.
Space and layout of the rooms (pictures of space included): Eight hallways with about eight rooms per hallway (two students per dorm room)
Number of students served at the school: 380 students
Number of students served in the dorms: 100 students with the goal to increase capacity through the renovation
Project Partners: Sara and Joshua To serve as Residential Faculty Eastside College Prep and also serve as project leads for BRUTE LABS.
About Eastside College Preparatory:
"At Eastside College Preparatory School we are committed to opening new doors for students historically underrepresented in higher education. Our challenging and engaging curriculum enables students to discover their intellectual strengths, sharpen their academic skills, and embrace new opportunities in a culture of learning that supports the potential of every student to enter and succeed in a four-year college and beyond. Eastside students who are the first in their families to go to college create a ripple effect, changing their own lives, the lives of their families, and the life of their community.
Working in a community with a high school drop-out rate around 70%, Eastside sends 100% of their graduating seniors to prestigious colleges and universities. Beyond that dramatic impact on the lives of their students and families, Eastside serves as a model institution for the entire East Palo Alto community. Eastside is the only high school in the last 30 years in the community of East Palo Alto that has consistently and successfully prepared and sent local students to college."
