Project Description

MARTiAL YOU is currently an effort, dubbed Project MARTiAL YOU, to create a community center focusing on providing the best martial arts instruction to the broadest range of individuals possible through reduced membership fees subsidized by fundraising, grant funding and donations.

A non-profit company was formed by Shawn Hill along with 3 separate board members with similar goals but from different walks of life to make this project a reality. Brian Bean, John Hafford and Steve Canwell stepped up to help meet this challenge by becoming the first board of directors. As of 04/23/2012 the company MARTiAL YOU was granted tax exempt status under the 501 (c) 3 Internal Revenue code.

Shawn Hill, has been a volunteer youth/adult instructor with several martial arts programs at various locations such as: TaeKwonDo USA in Bangor Maine, Eastern Maine Community College, CPC School Of Defense in Corinth Maine, and since 2004 to present day, the Bangor YMCA TaeKwonDo program.

Currently all programs and classes are run within the scope of the YMCA organization but are simply limited by the resources and attention of the YMCA. This has spawned the need for our own facility.

We are open to either new construction or the renovation of an existing structure. We do however require the concrete numbers to review in order to make that choice. One of our obstacles is not knowing what the new facility will cost versus renovation. The new construction plan will need a minimum of 4-5 acres of commercial land which is easy to asses but the facility itself needs to be designed and submitted for construction estimates before we know.

We do have leads on a current 33,000 square foot structure located in Bangor, Maine that will have 2.3 to 5 acres of land. This warehouse style structure needs to be evaluated and a renovation cost determined before we can know if it will be worth acquiring. Once we know these costs we will be aggressively seeking funding for this project and as soon as the capitol is raised we will move forward.

The planned center will not only be active in the community with student involvement projects, but will aggressively seek subsidies and funding to make our facility as green as possible. Going green with our facility will not only benefit the company by reducing its financial burden in the long term but will reduce its carbon footprint within our community. Achieving harmony with the mind, body and environment will be evident in our day to day operations.

Martial You will bring together many styles from Japanese Karate and Chinese Kung -Fu to Korean Tae Kwon Do and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Instruction in these styles will be made available as we attain volunteers for each discipline.

The center will focus on providing a location and equipment to those instructing and those learning. Since we are in the planning stages no current specifications exist for the center but we are planning to acquire an existing building or construct a new facility with at least 25,000-40,000 square feet of space. Our goal is to have enough square footage to allow 2 or more simultaneous classes along with space for equipment.

Each training area will be equipped with foam flooring along with various training aids, such as kick pads, focus mitts, free standing striking bags and hanging heavy bags. A moderate fitness center will be created with free weights and other standard fitness tools. Multiple changing rooms for both adults and children are planned if space allows.
Our organization requires and facility roughly around 25,000 to 35,000 square feet to house martial arts / fitness programs that will be attended by the surrounded community members. This structure needs to contain the following sections for use by its members:

4-8 classroom areas separated by movable walls, each roughly 3,600 sq. ft. in size

1 lobby area to comfortably have 20-30 people

1 childcare area capable of being occupied by 5 adult staff and 25 children simultaneously

1 Male Adult locker room equipped with bathrooms and showers to suite 25 to 30 simultaneous occupants

1 Female Adult locker room equipped with bathrooms and showers to suite 25 to 30 simultaneous occupants

1 Child changing area with several separated closed rooms for children to change into and out of uniforms (Picture a small hallway containing several private changing rooms)

1 male child bathroom constructed to suite youth ages 4 to 13

1 female child bathroom constructed to suite youth ages 4 to 13

1 Service Island near main entrance
1-2 Meeting Rooms along an Exterior wall each with window

10 Small Offices along the Exterior walls each with window

1 Main Equipment Storage Room

1 Pro Shop Area near main entrance

1 Fitness room roughly 2,000-3,000 sq. ft.

1 Full parking lot design with entry and exit to suite 100 + vehicles
