About this nonprofit organization
As our mission states, "826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write."Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. All of 826CHI's programs are free of charge, challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice. 826CHI's literary arts programs provide unique opportunities for Chicago Public School students to receive individual attention in writing projects from hundreds of committed volunteers. Through these interactions, students gain exposure to and instruction in the literary arts and learn that their writing matters. 826CHI annually engages more than 4,300 students in writing projects taught by local artists and volunteers.
