Haiti Partners' Children's Academy Phase II: Babou Bakery & Training Center
The Bakery was a collaboration by several organizations, including BAR Architects, Haiti Partners, and Extollo International. Construction of the building was used to train local tradespeople in safe construction techniques, using materials and systems readily available in Haiti. The newly trained construction team would then build the rest of the school buildings for the Children's Academy and learning center.
The Bakery was initially located on the first floor, with a multi-use classroom training space for the school and local community on the second floor. The Bakery was intended to create local jobs in the area, provide bread for the local community, and enable locals to resell bread to other nearby communities, with proceeds to fund the operation of the school.
Unfortunately, it was determined too difficult to create a market for the bread, and the facility quickly changed functions to accommodate paper making. Since 2016, the facility has been used to make beautiful, hand made paper.
The second floor and Training Centerof the Babou Bakey were completed in May 2015.
