Institute of Human Services (IHS) Women Shelter New Roof Garden
AHL designed a rooftop garden for the IHS, a social services agency that provides emergency shelter and support services to O'ahu's homeless population. IHS approached AHL with the goal of starting an urban agriculture skills training program with a garden full of vegetables and herbs that could enhance the nutrition of the meals served at the facility. With the construction of the rooftop garden, IHS can now: grow their own organic food; offer therapeutic and rehabilitative gardening; and provide marketable vocational skills through instruction, work experience, and mentoring. Graduates of this new program receive a certificate and employment placement.
